SIKKIM THE "GOODLY REGION", The "ONE OF THE REAL FORTIFIED PLACE"
SIKKIM is sheer magic. This is not just the most beautiful place in the world but also cleanest and safest too. With its unique culture and natural landscape, SIKKIM is a picture of perfection and pristine purity. Nestled in the Himalayas and endowed with exceptional natural resources, SIKKIM is a hot spot of biodiversity and development. Though small in size, yet Sikkim has been identified world over as an important repository of germplasms of unknown dimensions. Perhaps, there is no part of the world, which offers a spectacular scene with every turn of the road as SIKKIM. Though land-locked, SIKKIM is one of the most beautiful and strategically important state of the Indian Union.
SIKKIM has been given many names. The Lepchas, original inhabitants of the land called it Nye-mae-el or Nelyang i.e. `paradise' or “the land of hidden paradise or the delightful region or abode". The Limbus named it Su Khim or `brids new house' while to the Bhutias it was Beymul Demazong `the hidden valley of rice'.
The name SIKKIM has been coined from the words 'Su','Him'i.e. beautiful home. Though it should be better named by abode of the nature. The snow covered mountains and lush green valleys not only invigorates one's soul,it also leaves the spectators bewildered by the extravaganza of its natural beauty.

SIKKIM is a fascinating Himalayan Jewel. It is situated in Eastern Himalayas spreading below Mount Kanchenjunga (8,534m), the third highest picks mountain in the world. Lying between 27 to 28 degree North latitude and 88 to 89 degree East longitude, it is barely 7,096 sq. km in size yet has an elevation ranging from 224 m to 8,540 m above sea level in a distance of 110 km from North to South and 64 km from East to West.
The state’s about 64 km width is squeezed between the mountainous kingdoms of BHUTAN and NEPAL to the east and west respectively. The high plateau of Tibet lies 40 km to the north India’s and state of Bengal to its south.

The earliest historical mention of SIKKIM is a record of the passage of the great Buddhist saint Guru Rinpoche through the land in the 9th century. The Guru is reported to have blessed the land, introduced Buddhism, and foretold the era of monarchy that would arrive in SIKKIM centuries later. In the 14th century, according to legend, Khye Bumsa, a prince from the Minyak House in Kham in eastern Tibet, received a divine revelation instructing him to travel south to seek his fortunes. A fifth-generation descendant of Khye Bumsa, Phuntsog Namgyal, became the founder of Sikkim's monarchy in 1642, when he was consecrated as the first Chogyal, or priest-king, of Sikkim by three venerated lamas at Yuksom. Phuntsog Namgyal was succeeded in 1670 by his son, Tensung Namgyal, who moved the capital from Yuksom to Rabdentse. In 1700, SIKKIM was invaded by the Bhutanese with the help of the half-sister of the Chogyal, who had been denied the throne. The Bhutanese were driven away by the Tibetans, who restored the throne to the Chogyal ten years later. Between 1717 and 1733, the kingdom faced many raids by the Nepalese in the west and Bhutanese in the east, culminating with the destruction of the capital Rabdentse by the Nepalese. In 1791, China sent troops to support Sikkim and defend Tibet against the Gurkhas. Following Nepal's subsequent defeat, the Chinese Qing Dynasty established control over SIKKIM.
During British rule in INDIA, SIKKIM allied with Britain against their common enemy NEPAL. In 1890, SIKKIM became a British protectorate with sovereignty. A state council was established in 1955 to allow for constitutional government under the Chogyal. In the meentime the Sikkim National Congress demanded fresh elections and greater representation for Nepalese in SIKKIM. Later Palden Thondup Namgyal, the Chogyal at the time, proved to be extremely unpopular with the people, and in 1973, riots in front of the Chogyal's palace led to a formal request for protection from India. In 1975, the Prime Minister of SIKKIM appealed to the Indian Parliament for SIKKIM to become a state of India. A referendum was held in which 97.5% of the electorate voted to join the Indian Union. On 16 May 1975, Sikkim became the 22nd state of the Indian Union, and the monarchy was abolished. To enable the incorporation of the new state, the Indian Parliament amended the Indian Constitution. The 36th Amendment of INDIAN CONSTITUTION made Sikkim a full state of INDIA, adding its name to the First Schedule of the Constitution.

Perched between NEPAL in the west, BHUTAN in the east, and Tibet (China) in the north, SIKKIM is 7300 square miles in area and contains Mount Khangchendzonga, the third-highest peak in the world. Formerly a kingdom, since 1975 it has been a tiny land -locked province to INDIA.
SIKKIM's tiny size geographically belies the profound diversity she offers. The state has the steepest rise in altitude over the shortest distance and has within its 7,096 sq. kms the entire climatic range, from tropical to temperate to alpine, bestowing on the land an intense natural heritage.

Lush and thick forests, flush with blooms of exotic flora, hilly expanses embellished by Sikkim's two main rivers, the Teesta and the Rangeet, the picturesque villages, hot springs and waterfalls have a compelling appeal.
Dominating both legend and landscape of Sikkim is the mighty Khangchendzonga. Known to outside world as Kanchenjunga, it is the third highest peak in the world. But to the Sikkemese it is much more than a mountain: Khangchendzonga is the Guardian deity, a country God whose benign watchfulness ensures peace and prosperity for the land. The five peaks of Khangchendzonga are the five Treasures of the Eternal Snow, a belief beautifully interpreted by the great Lama Lhatsun Chenpo: “The peak most conspicuously gilded by the rising sun is the treasury of gold, the peak that remains in cold grey shade is the storehouse for silver and other peaks are vaults for gems, grains and the holy books.” Each of the five peaks is believed to be crowned by an animal—the highest by a tiger and others by a lion, elephant, horse and the mythical bird Garuda. Along with the Guardian deity, the Nepal Peak, Tent Peak, Pyramid, Jonsang, Lhonak, Pahunri etc. and glaciers like Zemu, Changsang, Teesta, and Changme are also important. The most important passes are Jelep-la, Nathu-la, Cho-la and Thanka-la in the east; Donkiua, Kongralamu and Naku in the north and Kanglanangma and Chia Bhanjyang in the west. The divine status of the mountain, sanctified by legend, has been made enduring by the widespread worship of Khangchendzonga by all the people of Sikkim - Lepchas, Bhutias and Nepalese alike. The God is depicted as being red of colour, armed and mounted on a white snow lion; offerings are made to this majestic presence, ceremonies are held in his name and dances consecrated to him.
The Himalayan Mountains surround the northern, eastern and western borders of Sikkim. The Lower Himalayas, lying in the southern reaches of the state, are the most densely populated. The state has 28 mountain peaks, more than 80 glaciers, 227 high-altitude lakes (including the Tsongmo, Gurudongmar and Khecheopalri Lakes), five major hot springs, and more than 100 rivers and streams. Eight mountain passes connect the state to Tibet, Bhutan and Nepal.Sikkim's hot springs are renowned for their medicinal and therapeutic values. Among the state's most notable hot springs are those at Phurchachu, Yumthang, Borang, Ralang, Taram-chu and Yumey Samdong. The springs, which have a high sulphur content, are located near river banks; some are known to emit hydrogen.
