MAHANANDA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY is a reserved forest area that initially started as a game sanctuary where children took rides. MAHANANDA WILDLOFE SANCTUARY is a very beautiful and crazy forest in North Bengal. It is located on the foothills of the great Himalayas, between the TEESTA and MAHANANDA rivers.
Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal. It comes under Darjeeling Wildlife division and can be reached from SILIGURI in 30 minutes.

The Sanctuary name 'MAHANANDA' comes from the River MAHANANDA.
SUKNA, the gateway to the sanctuary, is only 13 km from SILIGURI. The sanctuary sprawls over 159
SQUIRE km of reserve forest and was started as a
game sanctuary in 1955. In 1959, it got the status of a
sanctuary mainly to protect the Indian Bison and
Royal Bengal Tiger, which were facing the threat of
extinction.

MAHANANDA WILDLOFE SANCTUARY is spread over varying elevations and
across 158 sq. km of
forest area. The altitude varies from 500ft. at the southern area near SUKNA and rising up to 4,300ft towards the northern area near a place called
LATPANCHAR. The east side of the sanctuary is bounded by the River Teesta and on the
west side by the Mahanada Riverand Hill Cart Road.
The forest type in MAHANANDA WILDLOFE SANCTUARY varies from rive rain
forests like Khayer-Sisoo to dense mixed-wet forest in the higher elevation in 'Latpanchar' area of KURSEONG hills. The variation in altitude and forest types helps the existence of a large number of species of mammals,
birds and reptiles. (b) SUKNA RAIL STATION
SUKNA RAIL STATION of SUKNA is another place to visit even if the visitor had not taking a train journey from and to SUKNA. The old fashioned built station building built during British Raj gives a real heritage look. The most elegant Nero Gage line passing through the station is another thing to note. Finally when the TOY TRAIN arrives or departs or even passes through the seen is a real treat to watch.
(c) DARJEELING HIMALAYAN RAILWAY MUSUEM
DARJEELING HIMALAYAN RAILWAY MUSUEM is situated at SUKNA. It was setup in September 2005. This is the third DHR museum after the ones in Ghoom and Kurseong. SUKNA is about 11kms from Siliguri Junction Station. There is a great collection of rare pictures and sketches at the Sukna Museum. One such sketch is of a Sahib (a white foreigner) travelling on the shoulders of four Indian porters who are struggling to carry him uphill on a portable seat (called dandy). The dandy once used to be a mode of transport in Darjeeling area. It's an 1897 sketch and the Sahib on the sketch is Mark Twain.
At the photo gallery of Sukna Museum, visitors will also see a sketch of tangas
(horse drawn carriages) that used to ply in Darjeeling long before the Hill Cart Road was built. Rare pictures include the Toy Train coming out below the Sevoke Coronation Bridge, the original Kurseong station in 1880 before it was moved to its current location, the Tindharia station before the DHR railway workshop was setup there in 1910, and lot more.
A photograph shows a private trolley running along the DHR track. Another picture is that of a 100-year old woman who was called the Witch of Ghoom by the locals. She used to come to the Tindharia station area in 1890s.

At an altitude of 3400 ft, the place is close to the core area of the Mahananda
Wild Life Sanctuary. The beauty of LATPANCHER is enhanced by the enormous wealth of natural forests, covering almost the entire undulating slopes of hills by lush green virgin forests. these forests are the home to a large variety of flora and fauna including jungle cats, porcupines, wild booars, goat (serow), leopards, the rare mountain goat (serow), gaurs, mountain tigers, wild boars, different kinds of deer and monkeys, porcupines, civets monitor lizards, snakes and the list goes on.
LATPANCHAR is a mesmerizing mirror of natural beauty covered with forests
and Cinconha Plantation. LATPANCHER also houses one of the oldest quinine plantations Known for the medicinal plants.
The place is not plagued by pollution and ravaged by human activities. The dark,
deep forest adds to the mystery of the place. The air remains heavy with overwhelming fragrance of flowers through all seasons. Being a hidden and untapped destination the tourist crowd is minimal enabling the tourists to get a view of the Mighty Kanchenjunga and the hills of Kalimpong and lava , Tangda and the plains of Terai without much hustle and bustle.
LATPANCHAR is also popular for the bird lovers and jungle trekkers. Several
short treks originate from here leading to some treacherous terrain through the deep forest covers. The most important trekking trail goes up to Gulma peak - an unexplored hilltop in the Sanctuary and other down to Sevoke following a rather difficult stream through the virgin wilderness.

AHAL DARA is the viewpoint from where you can watch the sunrise over the Himalayas. The place is close to Namthing Lake and requires a walk of about 200 meters. From AHAL DARA the view of the hills is fantastic. Mount Kanchanjangha and many other picks are visible from here.
(b) NAMTHING LAKE or NATHANG LAKE
NAMTHING LAKE is also called as NATHANG LAKE. This is a small lake is one of the last natural habitats of the Himalayan Salamanders Situated at an altitude of 4250 ft above sea level, the beautiful lake is the natural habitat for a number of rare species.
The visit of this NAMTHING LAKE becomes more special for the wild life
lovers as in NAMTHING LAKE is only the second place in the region
where travelers an see the Himalayan Salamander in the wild, the
other place being Jodpokhri.

(c) LATKOTHI or LALKOTHI
LALKOTHI is also known as LATKOTHI. It is about 4 km from LATPANCHER lies serene LALKOTHI . The nice mountain road through the Cinchona, Sal, Teak and Pine trees reaches here to disclose the wonder of nature. The surrounding remains resonant with the chirp of birds at daybreak.
Here accommodation is provided to the travelers where they can spend a day or
may further visit the Kuhi area with special permit from the forest department. Colorful butterflies and birds welcomes a person to this region.
(d) SANSARI DARA
This is the viewpoint from where you can watch the sunrise over the Himalayas. The views are fantastic.
In SANSARI DARA point visitors had an added option too. If they wish and plan
to secure early booking they can stay in the accommodations available in the Forest bungalow.
(e) MONASTERY AND SUNRISE POINT
There is a 150-year old Buddhist monastery near the NATHANG LAKE and a view point which has excellent views of Mt. Kanchenjungha.
(f) RAJA RANI HILLS
This is another interesting point of this hamlet. There is a Lord Shiva temple at the peak of RAJA RANI HILL. Locals visit the temple to offer flowers at the the obedience of the Lord.
(v) PUNDING
PUNDING is a typical village of Darjeeling District of West Bengal. Very close or
better to say a part of MAHANANDA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY. Though it is a part of MAHANANDA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY but the main thing that separate this village from the others is it is a part of non timber forest. PUNDING is getting tourist
attraction for its paddy fields, forests, thatched bamboo houses on stilts and cattle. Many commercial films including the recent blockbuster "BARFI" is picturised in this village. PUINDING is very close to SUKNA the another famous tourist spot of this sector.

LIMBU VILLAGE is a small village rather a forest village of MAHANANDA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY very close to SUKNA. Normally having small and marginal cultivators, casual tea garden workers. It is a good place to witness the local tribal life and culture. But visitors should were because of human wild conflict any time wilds are coming to this village in search of food. As dogs are the favourite food for the leopards and to in search of the same leopard often come here. If not cautious visitors can also get attack by the wilds.
(ix) GOLAGHAT to KHOKLONG
GOLAGHAT and KHOKLONG both are situated in the area
of MAHANADA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY. Among this two
GOLAGHAT enjoys a BEAT status and also poses a watch
tower just on the bank of Mahnanda River just around 5km. from SUKNA. Many
