West Sikkim district
West Sikkim is a district of Sikkim that is glittering jewel in the crown of the enigmatic beauty--Sikkim. Its capital is Geyzing, also known as Gyalshing. The tourists get enamoured by the snow-capped mighty Kanchenzonga. The highlight of West Sikkim is the amazing Himalayan treks in the foothills of Mt Kanchenjunga (also spelt Kangchendzonga). This is also the base from where all treks into the Himalayas begin. The rolling mountains also offer some "low altitude" treks. The district is a favourite with trekkers due to the high elevations. West Sikkim is divided into two sub-divisions namely Gyalshing and Sorreng. Other important towns include Pelling, Yuksom, Bhareng, Mayong, Pemayangtse, Meli, Sombaria, Kaluk, Naya Bazar, Kongri and Jorethang.
West Sikkim district shares common boundaries with North District and South District to its North and East sides respectively. Nepal and the state of West Bengal are situated towards West and South directions. West Sikkim is 1166 square kilometers.
West Sikkim has the ancient capital of the state Yuksom in the north of western Sikkim. It served as the capital beginning in 1642 for almost 50 years until it was shifted to Rabtense. The district was under the occupation of the Nepalese for many decades in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. After the Gorkha War, the district was returned to Sikkim. The ruins of the second palace of Sikkim's Chogyals known as Rubduntse Ruins lay near Pemayangtse Monastery in Pelling. Western Sikkim not only holds the ancient heart and soul of Sikkim, it is where the travelers are most likely to discover Sikkim in its ancient form.
The district has a wide variety of fauna and flora to offer. Since most of the district is hilly it enjoys a temperate climate. Above 3,800 m (12,000 ft) the slopes are full of rhododendron forests.
In 1977 West Sikkim district became home to Khangchendzonga National Park, which has an area of 1,784 km2 (688.8 sq mi). It shares the park with North Sikkim district.
The economy is mainly agrarian, despite most of the land being unfit for cultivation owing to the precipitous and rocky slopes.
The main attraction in West Sikkim for adventurous travelers is trekking. The best way to enjoy the culture and natural beauty of western Sikkim is trekking. Terraced slopes, high plateau, alpine forests, great snow views, small lakes combining together offer some of the greatest trek routes in Eastern Himalayas.Yuksom, at the trailhead of the high-altitude treks is a beautiful town to spend a few days relaxing it is considered a holy town. The 300 year-old Dubdi Gompa (Buddhist temple), perched on a hill, is well worth visiting. Pelling, located on a hillside is another beautiful town with character.
